Following recent changes to departmental responsibilities, the functions of the former Department of Treaty, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, Communities and the Arts are transitioning to new departments. Work is underway to update departments’ websites.

Action Plan

The Queensland Government made a firm commitment to progress local solutions and decision-making with Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people.

This first Local Thriving Communities action plan (PDF, 2.4 MB) action plan(DOCX, 1.2 MB) sets out actions to be implemented in the short term underpinned by the principles of self-determination.

Through the action plan the Queensland Government has committed to better support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to:

  • make decisions about their own future
  • build on their strengths as a community
  • invest in the things that will make communities stronger and make a difference to people’s lives.

The action plan shows a transparent and accountable approach to the reform across government and highlights how local solutions will build capacity to support the reframed relationship with Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.

The Joint Coordinating Committee worked in partnership with the Queensland Government to co-design the action plan, provide cultural insight and build government readiness.

Cultural acknowledgement

We pay our respects to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ancestors of this land, their spirits and their legacy. The foundations laid by these ancestors—our First Nations peoples—give strength, inspiration and courage to current and future generations towards creating a better Queensland.

Our human rights commitment

We will respect, protect and promote human rights within our decision-making and actions.
