First Nations Economic Strategy

The Queensland Government is developing a new, whole-of-government First Nations Economic Strategy to support economic participation outcomes and self-empowerment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities, and businesses.

Economic empowerment is a vital element to the Statement of Commitment to a reframed relationship between Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the Queensland Government.

The strategy will acknowledge the long-standing contributions to Queensland’s economy by First Nations Queenslanders and seek agile and coordinated whole of government participation in partnership with First Nations Queenslanders to support current and emerging economic development opportunities.

Implementation of the strategy will include a focus on identifying economic development opportunities such as in infrastructure, resources, renewable energy, climate change, agriculture and aquaculture, and support emerging opportunities in industries including the NDIS, Indigenous tourism sector, arts and through the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The strategy will also support Queensland’s progress toward achieving the targets under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap and align with the Queensland Government's key reforms of Path to Treaty, Local Thriving Communities and a Queensland Indigenous Voice.

The Queensland Government will invest $1.4 million over four years to ensure the strategy is co-designed and implemented in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities, and representatives in government, industry and business.
